John and Kathy weren’t on the verge of divorce. They weren’t in crisis. After 13 years together and four kids ranging from ages 2 to 11, they came to Julia Woods’ Breakthrough marriage workshop for a quieter, more common reason: parenting stress had started bleeding into their marriage, and they didn’t have the tools to stop it.

Their story will sound familiar to a lot of parents. John, a retired Air Force veteran raised in a strict household, responded to discipline issues with intensity and a sharp tone. Kathy, more protective and easily flooded emotionally, experienced those moments as threats…not just to the kids in the moment, but to the whole future of the family. So a simple correction from John would spiral into a confrontation about how he said it, even when both of them agreed their boys needed guidance. Then came the stonewalling…days of silence and shutdown that left the disconnect feeling permanent.

The turning point wasn’t a new discipline strategy. It was emotional intelligence. John discovered that what he labeled “anger” was really rage that was driven by fear. Unnamed fear tends to show up as control and intensity. Kathy realized how much she’d been suppressing, and how fast her nervous system defaulted to withdrawal as self-protection. Once they stopped treating emotion as the enemy and started treating it as information, everything shifted. Anger and fear weren’t things to be ashamed of, they were signals pointing to values and unmet needs.

From there, the real work began: slowing down, naming what’s happening internally, and choosing a tone on purpose instead of reacting on autopilot. John learned to soften and reset instead of escalate. Kathy learned to name what she actually needed instead of expecting him to guess.

Six weeks later? Fewer defensive spirals. More teamwork. Calmer energy in the house. Kids responding to leadership instead of reacting out of fear.

This episode is proof that a strong marriage isn’t about avoiding conflict; it’s about knowing what to do with it. Click here to listen to the full podcast to hear exactly how John and Kathy turned their pattern around, and what it could mean for your own home.
