Most marriage conflict isn’t really about dishes, finances, intimacy, or schedules.

Those topics may start the conversation, but they’re rarely what keeps couples stuck. Beneath the surface is something much deeper: fear, old wounds, unmet needs, and the stories we begin telling ourselves the moment tension enters the room.

When conflict starts, it’s surprisingly easy to stop seeing your spouse as your partner and begin treating them like your opponent. One person pursues the conversation, trying to be understood or prove they’re right. The other withdraws, shuts down, or avoids the discomfort altogether. Before long, one difficult conversation turns into days of distance, resentment, and emotional exhaustion.

The surprising truth is that even highly capable, emotionally intelligent people often struggle with communication inside marriage. Not because they don’t love each other, but because unresolved pain has a way of hijacking present-day conversations. A disagreement that should be small suddenly feels enormous. Every word feels loaded. Every silence feels personal.

That’s why healthy marriages aren’t built by avoiding conflict. They’re built by learning how to recognize what’s happening beneath it.

One of the most powerful shifts is learning to pause and ask, What story am I telling myself right now? Am I feeling rejected? Unseen? Unimportant? Am I reacting to today, or to something much older that this moment has awakened?

When we become aware of those internal narratives, defensiveness begins to lose its grip. Curiosity replaces certainty. Ownership replaces blame.

In this podcast episode Aaron & Jen share practical tools, they have gained through years of attending Breakthrough, my couples communication workshop. These tools can be used by any couple immediately. One of their favorites is the phrase, “Go again.” Instead of allowing one poor conversation to define the next several days, revisit it with greater humility, slower pacing, and better listening. Simple statements like, “Here’s what I heard you say,” or “This is how I felt,” can completely change the direction of a difficult discussion.

Perhaps the most important question we can ask ourselves is, Who am I committed to being right now?

Strong marriages aren’t defined by the absence of conflict. They’re defined by how quickly two people repair, reconnect, and choose each other again. If you’ve ever felt trapped in the same argument over and over, this conversation offers both hope and practical next steps.
