Introduction
In today’s fast-paced world, where individualism often seems to reign supreme, the institution of marriage is frequently questioned. Some argue that marriage is outdated, a relic from times when societal structures required rigid roles between men and women. However, as a seasoned marriage coach and trainer, having navigated the joys and trials of marriage for 35 years, I’ve come to understand the profound impact marriage can have on our lives, beyond mere tradition.
The Myth of Marriage Being Outdated
The belief that marriage is no longer necessary has gained traction with changing societal norms. With women rising in career statistics and men being able to adopt children, traditional needs for marriage have shifted. Yet, despite these changes, dismissing marriage as obsolete overlooks its deeper significance. Marriage is not just about survival or societal norms; it’s about forging a deeper connection that can significantly impact our lives and those around us.
Rising Narcissism and Loneliness
In my work, I’ve observed two alarming trends: increasing narcissistic tendencies and escalating loneliness. Narcissism, a buzzword in modern discussions, is no longer confined to extreme cases. It permeates society, particularly among college students, driven by a culture focused on superficial achievements and external validations. Alongside this, loneliness has emerged as a significant epidemic. People live increasingly isolated lives, disconnected from family and social networks, leading to tragic consequences.
The Relational Need and Marriage’s Unique Role
We are innately relational beings, designed to need and be needed. Marriage is a unique relationship that offers the opportunity to move beyond self-absorption to a space of mutual vulnerability and emotional support. Through marriage, partners experience both the light and dark sides of each other, presenting a chance to combat narcissism’s grip and build lasting connections.
The Power of Vulnerability in Marriage
Marriage is a battlefield against self-absorption. It requires acknowledging that we need one another not just for day-to-day tasks, but for emotional, spiritual, and intellectual support. In my own marriage, learning to expose our vulnerabilities has been transformative. Needing one another allows us to bring our weakest and darkest selves to light, fostering personal growth and relational strength.
Living an Authentic Life in Marriage
An authentic marriage is built on the foundation of daily honest and vulnerable conversations. Sharing insecurities and actively seeking to understand each other’s needs advances personal development and fortifies the marital bond. It’s about serving and negotiating together, preserving the gift of partnership by living truthfully, not through a façade fashioned for societal approval.
