As the year comes to a close, it’s natural to reflect on what’s passed and dream about what’s ahead. This time of year offers couples a unique opportunity to take stock of their relationship, celebrate the growth they’ve experienced, and plan intentionally for the future. In the latest episode of the Hey Julia Woods podcast, I dive into the transformative power of reflecting on your marriage annually and how this practice can help you thrive through the decades.

Did you know that 1 in 3 marriages don’t make it past the seven-year mark? And only 3% of marriages last five decades or more. That reality underscores the importance of being intentional, not just in the early years but throughout every stage of your marriage. It’s not the years but the decades themselves that build a strong relationship—it’s the intentional choices made each year that determine the decades.

In this episode, I share a simple but powerful exercise for couples to make an annual tradition. It starts with asking honest questions about your relationship, such as:

  • What growth do I see in myself?
  • What growth do I see in my spouse?
  • What growth do I see in us as a couple?
  • What new growth do I long to see in myself and in us?

These questions help couples focus on what’s working, identify areas for growth, and reignite hope for their shared future. The exercise is designed to bring couples closer by encouraging meaningful conversations and a shared commitment to growth.

I also discuss the importance of tending to your marriage with the same care you’d give a home. Just like a house needs regular maintenance to stay beautiful and functional, your marriage needs intention and effort to stay strong and vibrant. Neglecting these “small repairs” can lead to bigger problems over time.

Whether you’ve had a great year or a challenging one, this episode is an invitation to slow down, get curious, and approach the new year with purpose. It’s about rediscovering hope and creating the marriage you’ve always longed for.

Tune in to the full podcast episode for more practical insights and encouragement. You’ll walk away with actionable steps to ensure that your marriage not only survives but thrives in the year to come.
