In the world of personal growth and self-improvement, I, Julia, have discovered that one of the often overlooked keys to more fulfilling relationships is emotional maturity. Over the past decade, I have grown so much in navigating my emotions, communicating effectively, and taking responsibility for my inner world. In this blog post, I invite you to join me as I share what I am learning about emotional maturity and how it can transform not only your conversations but your entire life. Let’s transform your conversations with emotional maturity!
Are you ready?
A Decade Ago: A Cry for Appreciation
About a decade and a half ago, I was in a constant state of longing. I yearned for my husband’s appreciation and recognition of the hard work I put into our lives. However, at that time, my emotional maturity was rather low, and the conversations with my husband were anything but constructive. They were dramatic, defensive, and laden with intense emotions – anger, shouting, and tears were the norm.
My Emotional Immaturity
My emotional immaturity led me to believe that my husband was responsible for my emotional reactions. I believed that if he would just notice my efforts, my emotions wouldn’t spiral out of control. As long as I blamed him for my emotional responses, I had not control over them.
What Is Emotional Maturity?
Emotional maturity, as I define it, is the ability to confront and work through my emotions in a healthy, not reactive way, so I can effectively communicate my wants and needs. At the time, I was somewhat out of touch with my emotions and letting them control me. I oscillated between being overwhelmed by my feelings, shutting down, or experiencing outbursts.
My Emotional Growth Journey
To initiate my transformation, I took a simple yet powerful approach. Each day, I set aside times to check in with my emotions (I committed to doing this every time I got in the car). I asked myself what I was feeling and whether those feelings were true. Gradually, I began to mature my emotional capacity, gaining a better understanding of myself and improving my ability to listen to my thoughts.
The Results of Emotional Maturity
This journey yielded significant results. My emotions no longer overwhelmed me all the time, and I gained better control over my reactions. I also realized that as I continued to invest in growing my character, my emotional maturity expanded – I became more honest and open in my conversations, and others found it easier to be honest with me in return. I learned how to remain neutral when others displayed emotional immaturity, and my authenticity and presence in conversations improved significantly. And these results aren’t isolated to myself. I have witnessed countless clients experience the same growth when they have chosen to develop emotional maturity.
