If I had the key to experiencing your own marriage miracle, would you want it? Are you skeptical about the possibility of marriage miracles in today’s world of increasing divorce rates?

I’m here to tell you that they absolutely happen! Four couples who I have had the pleasure of working with this summer, went from separated or planning stages of divorce to a new commitment to creating a thriving lifetime marriage!

One of the most fulfilling parts of my work is hosting a couples workshop called “Breakthrough.” It’s not your run-of-the-mill retreat; it’s a communication workshop designed to equip couples with the needed tools and time to break through to new levels in their communication and, ultimately, their relationship.

Breaking Through

Last month, something truly extraordinary happened at Breakthrough: Four couples who were either separated or in the planning stages of divorce, came to the workshop with little to no hope, but what transpired over the course of just one weekend was nothing short of miraculous. They walked away with a new commitment to themselves and each other and committed to creating a thriving lifetime marriage.

You might be wondering, what’s the secret behind these marriage miracles? Well, it’s simpler than you might think, and it starts with understanding my concept of a Marriage Neighborhood.

The Marriage Neighborhood

Imagine your marriage as a neighborhood, with you and your spouse as neighbors. Each of you has your own backyard filled with thoughts, emotions, beliefs, actions, reactions, attitudes, and more. Often, couples stand at the metaphorical fence, pointing fingers at each other’s backyards, blaming one another for the problems in the relationship. 

The problem with this approach is that while each spouse is focusing on the other’s backyard, they are completely ignoring the weeds that are growing fast and furiously in their own backyard. 

This problem with this approach is it only leads to contempt, bitterness, and, eventually, the disintegration of the marriage.

New Ways

Here’s what these remarkable couples did differently: 

• They chose to take responsibility for themselves and get their two feet firmly planted in their backyard. 
• They got clear on who they were committed to be as a spouse, and what character trait(s) they most needed in their marriage to make that come about.
• They got fully focused on what it was that they were contributing to the conflicts that were going nowhere. 
• They took full responsibility for their ability to connect in the conversations, asking themselves if they were creating the connection they longed for or just waiting for their spouse. 
• They were willing to go again and keep trying.

As both partners began focusing on their own backyard, something incredible happened – they started having conversations they never thought possible. These deeper conversations led to a deeper connection that they did not even think was possible, and they began to realize that their marriage was a marriage worth having and fighting for.

Your Marriage Miracle
