If you are criticizing your spouse and creating more disconnection in your marriage, would you want to know?
Criticism causes relationship breakdowns, and in today’s episode, I reveal what that actually looks like and how to shift from criticizing your spouse to connecting on a deeper level.
In this blog post, we’ll explore this transformative concept and give you a sneak peek of an enlightening YouTube episode that delves into it.
The Problem with Criticism
Nobody enters a relationship with the intention of criticizing their partner. Yet, over time, it’s not uncommon for this destructive behavior to creep in. Research by therapist John Gottman reveals that criticism is the first of the four behavioral predictors of divorce or break-up. Criticism can lead to defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling, ultimately jeopardizing the relationship.
Criticism goes beyond constructive complaints about specific actions and attacks a person’s character, personality, upbringing, or history. This form of criticism can erode your partner’s self-worth, create anger, and drive a wedge between you and your spouse.
Identifying and Overcoming Criticism
To put a stop to criticism, it’s crucial to recognize when you’re engaging in it. Some signs of criticism include using exaggerated terms like “always” or “never,” making jokes about your spouse’s flaws, expressing concerns with anger and resentment, telling your partner what they should have known or shouldn’t do, redoing tasks to your standards, and asking “why” questions like “Why can’t you just do what I ask?”
The Power of Curiosity
The key to transformation lies in curiosity. Instead of assuming you know everything about your spouse, approach them with curiosity. Ask questions and consider that there might be more to their actions and feelings than meets the eye.
When I was able to move from criticism to curiosity with my own husband, I discovered a new way of connecting, understanding, and appreciating him. Curiosity was the superpower I needed to revive my marriage.
