When couples say their wedding vows, they envision a lifetime of love and commitment.

However, statistics reveal a harsh reality many couples don’t see coming until it’s too late. Are You Heading Towards Divorce?

As a couples coach with over three decades of experience, I aim to help couples create life-giving communication that allows both partners to feel seen and heard, even during challenging conversations. My husband, Jeff, and I have weathered our share of storms, and I know firsthand the transformation possible when you address the warning signs before it’s too late.

Research by Beth Potier indicates that only 10% of college students believe they could end up divorced, yet nearly 50% of marriages eventually do. Most couples who divorce never anticipated it happening to them. Even more concerning, according to Vicki Larson’s research, six out of ten couples who stay married consider themselves unhappy in their relationships. It’s a wake-up call that we can’t ignore.

Here are the five subtle yet dangerous signs that can lead to emotional, physical, or could be heading for divorce.

  1. Not Reconciling Conflicts: Avoiding difficult conversations and sweeping conflicts under the rug only make matters worse. Conflicts are gifts that lead to growth when handled correctly.
  2. Blaming Each Other: Playing the blame game may feel like a victory in the moment, but it erodes the love, connection, and partnership you desire.
  3. Waiting For Your Spouse to Change: Waiting for your partner to change makes you a passive victim in your own marriage while it crumbles around you.
  4. Ruminating After Conflicts: Focusing on your partner’s flaws instead of examining your choices perpetuates negative patterns.
  5. Stonewalling: Shutting down emotionally and refusing to communicate is a destructive behavior that can lead to divorce, as per research by the Gottman Institute.

No couple wants to be part of these statistics, so we’re inviting you to watch the full YouTube episode. It’s packed with practical advice on recognizing and addressing these hidden signs to build a thriving, lasting marriage.
